GEF – INVITATION TO PRESENT AT FARMERS WORKSHOP IN ST KITTS

Mr Gibbs-Halls was requested to present his work on Nevis to an audience of farmers on St Kitts which proved both valuable in terms of offering support to the Federation as a whole and meeting new stakeholders suffering with the same conflict issues.

His presentation was met with great interest and a lengthy Q and A session which followed. Farmers are keen to embrace the new ideas offered to Mr Gibbs-Halls and all felt positive with regard to a scientific way forward in tacking this challenge. Since the meeting, Mr Gibbs-Halls has returned to St Kitts on the request of some farmers to conduct site visits and offer advice with regard to feeding stations, protection of farms and unlocking further tourism opportunities. The event was also filmed and televised. It is becoming more and more prevalent that once farmers understand the science behind troop dynamics and monkey ecology, they start to realise how these interventions can come into play as viable options to reduce conflict with monkeys.
